I'm going to be traveling out of the country and will be driving a vehicle. Will my policy cover me?

Your policy covers you while driving any where in the United States of America, its territories and possessions, Puerto Rico or Canada. It will not provide coverage in any other country. You should purchase coverage from that country or rental company prior to driving, if not in the US, Puerto Rico, or Canada. There is NO automatic coverage for driving in Mexico!

If I rent a vehicle or motorhome, do I need to buy the rental company insurance?

Our policy automatically covers rental vehicles for temporary use by the named insured or family member who is a resident of the insured's household. Rental companies offer a deductible buy-back option. You do not need to buy this coverage if you have coverage for collision and other than collision (comprehensive) under your policy and are not concerned about the deductibles which would apply (the same deductibles you carry on the vehicle you insure with us will apply to this rented vehicle). This automatic coverage applies only to private passenger vehicles. U-Hauls, motor homes and business vehicles are not covered by our policy. Utility and recreational trailers are limited to $2500 coverage. You should buy the rental company's coverage on those vehicles not covered by our policy. Check with your agent for specifics.

If my car breaks down, will Farm Bureau pay for me to have it towed?

We will pay for towing if you have the optional coverage Emergency Road Service. This coverage pays for reasonable expenses for towing and labor costs (if the labor is done at the place of disablement) for the covered auto. Contact your agent to purchase this coverage.

Is there a discount for having both my auto and home coverage insured with Farm Bureau?

Yes, called a total account discount. This credit is applied at each renewal if you maintain both your property and auto coverages with us. If you are not receiving this discount, consider the savings of insuring with us. Contact your agent for details.

I'm going to drive my parent's car. Will I be covered under their policy?

Yes, provided you have their permission and are a family member or a listed operator on their policy. Make sure that you notify your insurance company or agent before getting behind the wheel.

What are some of the optional automobile coverages available?

A variety of coverages are available including comprehensive, collision, rental reimbursement, emergency road service, stereo equipment, accidental death, and disability income to name a few. Contact your agent for specific details, costs, and other options.

What automobile insurance coverages are mandatory?

State law requires all Missouri motorists to have at least three coverages. They are Bodily Injury, Property Damage, and Uninsured Motorist coverage. These are the only coverages mandated by the state.

If your vehicle is financed, your lender may require that you buy two more coverages: Collision and Comprehensive (Other than Collision). These will protect you and the lender if your vehicle suffers damage or loss.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the amount of damages that you agree you will be responsible for if you have a claim.

Most insurance policies have a deductible which states that a portion of the amount paid for the loss will be subtracted (deducted) from the amount the insurance company would otherwise pay. This amount is not paid to the company, it simply becomes your share of the loss and is deducted from the payment.

What is Collision coverage?

Collision provides protection for the upset of a covered automobile or its impact with another vehicle or object.

What is Comprehensive (Other than Collision) coverage?

Other Than Collision covers damage to the covered automobile from risks such as falling objects, fire, theft, explosion or earthquake, windstorm, hail, water or flood, vandalism, riot, contact with a bird or animal, or glass breakage.

What is the difference between split limits coverage and combined single limits coverage?

If you carry 25/50/25 "split" liability limits on your policy, the coverage would apply like this:

25- $25,000 would be the maximum payable per person injured in any one accident

50-$50,000 would be the maximum payable for all injured persons in any one accident

25- $25,000 would be the maximum payable for property damage of others in any one accident.

If you carry combined single liability limits, this would mean that you choose a limit and that could be distributed in any combination in the case of an accident. Example: You select $100,000 combined single limit. That $100,000 is the maximum payable for all bodily injury/property damage claimed in any one accident, whether paid for one person, several people, or property damage; or any combination.

What payment plan options are available?

Monthly - You will be billed each month Quarterly - You will be billed every three months
Semi-annual - You will be billed every six months
Annual - You will be billed once a year
Electronic Funds Transfer Option - You may have the premium on any of the above payment plans electronically deducted from your designated bank account on the due date of your bill. View more EFT information and an application and change forms take advantage of this option.

A service charge will be added to policies billed on either monthly or quarterly payment plans. No service charge will be added to semi-annual or annual payment plans.

Why do I have a deductible?

Deductibles serve several functions. Shifting the cost of small claims to the person buying the insurance (insured) enables the insurance company to reduce premiums. Small dollar claims often cost more to adjust and settle than the claim itself. The cost of insurance would be much higher if there were no deductibles. The higher the deductible, the lower your premium cost.

Why do young drivers pay more for car insurance?

Some people think young drivers pay too much for auto insurance. They feel younger motorists are being penalized. But this isn't true. Young drivers are involved in 39% of Missouri's accidents. Over 21% of the drivers under the age of 24 are involved in an accident each year. By comparison, only 5% of motorists in the 65-74 age group have accidents annually.
